Why
Atheism Exists.
This is not
proselytization. This is... why.
"When a person cannot deceive himself,
the chances are against his being able to deceive other people."
- Mark Twain
Atheists know better.
Atheists are ahead of the everyday curve in understanding the threat of
religious psychotics long before 9/11. We know what they're about, we
know how stupid, irresponsible, hateful, and murderous they are. With
churches on major street corners all over the world, and no system of
due process, belief alone in God can move a man to plan and justify murder
of any kind, any time. We know to suspect religion, and we know there
is record to blame religion for atrocities, for excuses, and for destruction
of entire ways of life, if not entire races. Of course it isn't actually
God that is to blame, but in the minds of psychotic people, God is a powerful
weapon against rational co-existence, and accountability.
Atheists
are sentinels protecting humanity's stash of material
truth. Of
course, atheist or not, we're all susceptible to being duped. But atheists
tend to be the people who utilize the fullest extent of science, the powers
of mental accuity and reason, a prerequisite for hard, indisputable facts,
and evidence to support all claims, and a dogged determination not to
submit to things that are both wrong and detrimental to the race. They
are leaders in the search for the truth on nearly every topic imaginable,
from history to law to mythology to biology.
Atheists are infatuated
with the truth.
Be honest. The only reasons to believe in God are fear
and hope. The absurdities delivered as proof of God existing don't add
up. You have no trouble seeing the difference between the imagination
and the reality that went into Greek mythology. You don't think
God used to live on Mount Olympus with thousands of his fellow god friends,
do you? Whatever your reasons for believing in God, think of atheists
as those who understand that some day, all your beliefs about God will
be no more than comic book stories for children, as soon as a more compelling
story for adults is set down. It is only a matter of time, and imagination.
Some atheists hope to find that next belief system as soon as possible,
because they feel the current beliefs are impossibly corrupt and doomed.
Others simply do without, and are quite pleased with their ability to
live well with "no invisible means of support."
Many people lie about god because they believe, but
god-free is the way the universe is. There is neither business within
society nor outside of it that is determined by God. You ought to be free
to believe whatever suits you best, but you are always responsible to,
and struggling within a secular reality. Whatever god you believe in,
if any, the god exists only as a literary, psychological, phenomenal (therefore
explainable), private, or eternally impractical idea. The elements
of our existence require no overarching spokes-idol. Wherever there
is something out there that is truly "beyond our understanding",
then there is no way to discuss it, acknowledge it, nor possess it, and
ultimately no god is a proper substitute for reality. It is far more important
to tell the truth than to insist that others accept what you believe in.
Excuses for believing
in God are often inexcusable. In the experience of many atheists,
believers are capable of lying about nearly everything, and this capability
of lying is more than frightful, it is destructive towards many, many
things we value, including good science, real history, important human
rights, even spirituality itself. This is, of course, in addition to a
culture of lies which artificially put corporate interests above human
interests, churches over their subjects, and tiny, greedy interest groups
over entire races. Muslim jihadists aren't the only ones. Every
unscrupulous religion is going to be guilty of secular territorialism
and a violation of humanity, it is only a question of how.
A favorite example of the inexcusable use of God is
the story of Jim Jones, an exemplary religious leader in United States
communities, who was praised by everyone for his contributions to literacy
and charity. Well, this man, who was once a hero in the religious
community, one day crowned himself God, and poisoned several hundred of
his followers. It doesn't add up, does it? One day the man
is obviously inspired by the highest ideals and doing the most amazing
works for humanity, and the next minute, he's a crackpot bend on murdering
his entire church. They say the Lord works in mysterious ways. But
this Lord's ways are a lot more fickle and childish than they are mysterious.
And if you knew anyone who was poisoned by the purple Kool-Aid,
you'd probably want the facts about the God who had his way with Jim Jones.
And atheists would understand completely.
Atheism is a catalyst
for elite degrees of intellectual thought, idea crossing, debate,
enlightenment, and relief. That is the primary reason why this website
exists. Some of us really love the God mythologies, teleologies
and anti-philosophies because they carve fertile land into the psyche
for deeper thought. Without
having to lie about it ... God is great. If God has lost His fuel,
as many believe, then only in returning to Nature will we navigate the
long journey home.
God is an enormous
central theme in Western thought. Many of the philosophers and scientists
who shaped Western civilization incorporated assumptions about God into
their interpretations of the universe. Most of our legal and technological
interests are centered around assumptions first made about God. Though
God has never been required to actually exist, He sure as hell never left
people's minds. In order to understand the designs of Western society,
language and philosophy, one cannot escape the catalyst of God. Therefore,
in order to partake in or liberate oneself from the assumptions of God's
mythology, one must engage either in the existing theism and alter the
myths, or atheism, and learn how to deprogram them.
If you are taking
a theistic religion seriously,
you cannot avoid atheism: fundamentally, spiritually, and intellectually.
Truer than anything ever said about any god is the fact that he
doesn't really exist. The ability to function with no gods is absolutely
required to entertain any truth in the mythology of God. For whatever
reason, a god can only appear when ignorance is preferred or the boundaries
of human intelligence have been exhausted.
Identifying oneself
as an atheist is often a statement of liberation, synonymous
with "not brainwashed" or "no longer brainwashed".
This is a positive statement inside an overarching negative assertion.
The negative is, for example, the perpetual discovery that a high percentage
of people are culturally brainwashed to believe in things that are not
real, don't exist, or are tied intrinsically to ulterior (malevolent)
motives. It's alright if you are permissive of a belief, but most people
have had their consent to believe in God forced upon them against their
will and better judgement. If that sort of conspiracy makes for
a better world, then let it, but I, and my peers, are certain there is
malevolence in the modern adaptations. One of the most evident demonstration
of that has been the rampant molestations and abuses that have occurred
under the Catholic cloak of infallibility. Those cases alone should be
evidence that God is a flexible premise with a full range of perversion
available to humans. And understand that the abuses that are reported
are just the abuses that have recently gained the interest of American
courts, and it took hundreds of years of unaddressed abuses to do so.
Corruption is inherent to both the myth and the conspiratorial adoption
of the myth - we invent God, we write his every word, and then we interpret
it. Banning the Spanish Inquisition may be enough for a lot of people,
but not for those who understand the potential in lying about God. Just
look how certain politicians chomp at the bit to become the darling of
religious communities without any responsibility to their public service
obligations.
Atheism often exists
as a protest against bad beliefs.
Atheism (a.k.a. the inherent
lack of god in the universe) is not technically a bone of agitation
or argumentation (as many assume). That is, until it comes in conflict
with those who UNNATURALLY oppose it... as stated above, godlessness
is the simple state of Nature. Those who oppose atheism oppose
nature. You and I and everyone else are born atheists without
ever having to realize that we are. But as long as agitation
and argumentation are what is required to address the psychological
grip religion has on society, children, our fellow man, and our biosphere,
individual atheists will be compelled to speak and act upon their
conscience.
Atheists tend to be
really, really smart. Atheists like finding each other and
putting each other to good use. That is the other reason why this website
exists. Atheists try to be more mature than the going rate of common
sense, and prepared to explore new ideas. You can talk about just about
anything with an atheist.
Atheists intend to
preserve rational thinking in civil discourse.
a) Ever since it has been
decided that a society is governed best by rational deliberation,
our obligation has been to the best and most contemplative forms of
wisdom available to us. It is true that we must use anything
and everything at our disposal; and it is true that wisdom today is
rare; but it is not true that hypothetical or ancient wisdom can ever
perform the same functions, with the same checks and balances, as
the tested truth. It is not our faith that men will ever be brilliant
enough to understand things rightly. However, removing faith
from wrong assertions and corrupt truths is our commitment to real
justice.
b) The most outspoken believers in God often believe that there is
some alternative state of mind which obtains, for select individuals,
the authority of God (a.k.a. the Divine Creator and Overseer of
the Universe) to determine what is best for everyone. This
typically is geared toward the highest levels of political power,
public policy, and education. And it leads to all kinds of sick
and debilitating conflicts with healthy humanity that atheists do
their best to rationally oppose.
